Trimble Reality Capture: Inspection of prefabricated structures

Enriching the inspection process of prefabricated structures for mining operations, our friends at Eleccon Maquinarias share their workflow. This is based on the use of Reality Capture tools, such as the Trimble X7 laser scanner, Trimble Realworks processing software, and the Trimble Connect collaboration platform.

The assembly of prefabricated structures involves the coordination of various resources, from personnel to machinery. Therefore, detailed planning in each area becomes essential to achieve the goal of a successful assembly, avoiding delays and additional costs.
While the structure of this experience is not critical, this same workflow can be successfully extrapolated to more complex components. With the Trimble X7, the manufactured component is scanned, preferably in the same workshop. This allows for immediate correction of any variation from the manufacturing plan. Additionally, it is possible to scan the installation area as well, analyzing the component in operation and its connections.

This methodology allows us to perform a virtual assembly, where we verify that the new component meets the specified tolerances in its manufacturing plan. It also facilitates the planning of the necessary maneuvers for assembly and analyzing whether the component can be successfully installed or if adjustments are required for proper installation.
The process begins with scanning new components in the workshop using the Trimble X7 equipment. This quick and simple step automatically records the point cloud on site, allowing visualization of the cloud and ensuring that no information is missing before leaving the location.

Back in the office, Trimble Realworks offers various filters and classification methods for the point cloud, simplifying processing. Once the cloud is classified, we have three options:
- Dimension verification directly on the point cloud.
- 3D modeling of the component for simplified inspection of distances, angles, etc.
- Import a 3D design model to verify deviations.

The results obtained can be easily shared with the work team through Trimble Connect, fostering collaboration and ensuring smooth communication throughout the process.
