An automatic targeting system consists of a device that discriminates a prism in terms of making a precise observation of its direction (horizontal and vertical) and distance. These systems are the basis of any robotic total station, allowing for automation of geodetic observations.
The Trimble S Series and SX10 total stations have the following automatic targeting systems:- Autolock: corresponds to automatic targeting for tracking moving targets.
- Finelock: is a system specialized in static targets for monitoring applications and high-precision determination of geodetic observations.
- Autolock Advanced: is the automatic targeting system of the Trimble SX10 scanning total station.
Experiment
There are 4 points:
- SM is the origin of the system and where the total station is installed
- HC is the reference for the orientation of the system
- P1 and P2 are control points of a monitoring system
The objective is to repeatedly measure the angle P1 – SM – P2 through cycles on both faces of the total station using Autolock and Finelock.

Observation Experience with both Total Stations

Both stations were used with Trimble Access. Four observation cycles were performed in direct and reverse (face 1 and face 2), obtaining sufficient data to calculate the most probable values for inclined distance and horizontal and vertical angles.
In the case of SX10, approximate targeting is done using the Trimble Vision system. Then, the automatic targeting system does its job by instantly locking onto the prism.

In the case of S8, conventional targeting was performed using its telescope. The lock was based on Finelock.

Results
After processing the observations, the most probable values are obtained:

Conclusions
The use of automatic targeting systems, whether Finelock or Autolock, allows for the automation of repeated geodetic observations. Finelock offers a specialized measurement method for situations requiring the highest possible precision in geodetic observation.
Perhaps the underlying issue is the range of automatic aiming. While Autolock reaches a maximum of 400 m, Finelock achieves up to 2500 m in its long-range version.
