Trimble S Series Total Stations are equipped with servomotors that allow the instrument to be positioned and targets to be focused.
The servo-assisted system is a Magdrive technology system with direct, friction-free electromagnetic drive. The direct drive system allows servomotors to be installed directly on the horizontal and vertical axes. Therefore, there is no need for another mechanical gear. It provides high rotation speeds and high precision. The friction-free movement eliminates servomotor noise and reduces instrument wear. The system provides endless horizontal and vertical movement, including fine friction adjustment. The instrument uses the servomotor to perform various operations, such as rotating the movement and focus knobs or using Autolock technology in robotic measurements.
The horizontal servosystem also contains two accelerometers; the front accelerometer is located inside the TCU adapter panel and the side accelerometer is located inside the battery side cover. These accelerometers detect instrument movement (vibration) and send this information back to the servosystem to increase stability. The two accelerometers compensate for the effect of an unstable setup of the station on the tripod or external influences, for example, movement of heavy machinery near the station setup. This instability is reflected in an "instrument vibration."

Due to the high speed of the servomotors, it is necessary for the instrument to be on a tripod in a stable position to avoid possible excessive "vibration" of the station caused by servo-assisted movement.
This can affect the angular precision level of the measurement and the wear of the accelerometers, which will not be able to compensate for the effects of instability, thus requiring repair or replacement. Therefore, for a stable instrument position, the tripod legs need to be spread further apart, as shown below.

GEOCOM Technical Service is the only Technical Service that performs the "Friction Test" for the S series,
which electromagnetically and graphically analyzes (considering evaluation parameters) the correct performance of the servo-assisted system using Service Software, exclusive to TRIMBLE. In addition, as an official TRIMBLE Technical Service, it is possible to repair S series Total Stations and exclusively perform, for example, the replacement of accelerometers.
