TECHNICAL SERVICE ADVICE | TRIMBLE TSC5: Operating system update to prevent battery charging failure

IMPORTANT!

The Trimble® TSC5 controller operates with an internal battery that cannot be removed by the user.

The following battery symbol represents an internal battery status that means the unit is in PF (Permanent Failure). The bootloader cannot start the operating system.

This means an internal error has occurred, which is severe enough to cause the TSC5 to permanently shut down and become unusable.

ALL TRIMBLE TSC5 CONTROLLERS PURCHASED BEFORE OCTOBER 2022 ARE POTENTIALLY VULNERABLE TO THIS ISSUE.

SOLUTION:

A firmware update has been implemented to address most battery failures through a new Android operating system update.

The OS update version is v02.04.03. This update will download automatically to the Trimble TSC5 Controller, which must have an internet connection to download and update. A notification will be displayed when this update becomes available. The notification will be similar to the following example:

If this notification does not yet appear, we recommend forcing it by going into the Android settings menu and looking for the system update option.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES FOR CHARGING THE TSC5 INTERNAL BATTERY

Recharge batteries at any time; it is not necessary for batteries to be empty or low before recharging. However, it is best to let the battery run below 10 percent at least once a month before recharging. Battery recharging is supported at temperatures between 0 °C and +40 °C.

For optimal charging conditions, use only Trimble® designated charging accessories to recharge batteries. If your charger is damaged or does not charge, you must purchase an original Trimble® one.

The device is sealed against water and dust and has been tested for drop protection from heights of up to 122 cm. To extend battery life, be careful to avoid water, unnecessary drops, mechanical shocks, and vibrations.

LONG-TERM STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS

The device can be placed in Shelf mode for shipping or long-term storage (30 days or more). Shelf mode is a low-power mode to conserve energy. In Shelf mode, the controller's meter shuts down to its lowest power level and the TSC5 cannot be discharged or charged. There is also no communication. Trimble recommends charging the device to at least 30% before setting it to Shelf mode.

To put your device in Shelf mode: Go to Settings/Battery/Advanced/Shelf mode enabled and select OK.

Alternatively, press and hold the power key for a couple of seconds to access the option to put the device in Shelf mode. The device will shut down.

To take your device out of Shelf mode: first, use the Trimble-supplied charger to activate Shelf mode; if this does not work, a connection with a USB-A to USB-C cable connected to a PC will be necessary. A USB-A (PC) to USB-C (device) cable connection will activate the batteries from Shelf mode.
