INTRODUCTION TO THE LIDAR WORLD with GENIUS Mini UAV LiDAR System

WHAT IS LIDAR?

It is an active sensor that emits its own laser pulse and records the information that is reflected back after intersecting with surfaces.

LiDAR measurement principle

WHAT DOES LIDAR MEASURE?

It reconstructs three-dimensionally:

  • Objects / scenes / terrain by means of the point cloud

Point cloud

HOW IS LIDAR ORIENTED?

It reconstructs three-dimensionally:

By means of the sensor's pose:
  • 6 parameters: 3 translation, 3 orientation

LIDAR CAPTURE MODE

LiDAR pulses are sent from the sensor in multiple directions; to do this, the LiDAR has a rotating mirror system.
Depending on the shape of the mirror, various scanning patterns are obtained:

  • Linear
  • Zigzag
  • Elliptical (Palmer)
  • Fiber optic

LIDAR PROPERTIES

Pulse: It is the beam of light (energy) generated and emitted by the LiDAR
Return: It is the energy of a pulse that returns to the LiDAR once it hits a surface.
Recording capacity: It is the data storage capacity of the LiDAR system; two types of LiDAR can be differentiated here.
