RIEGL VZ-2000i: High-Precision Mobile Mapping System with Kinematic App
3-kilometer Linear Urban Survey in Just 10 Minutes
In our latest GEOCOM experience, we showcase the full productivity offered by RIEGL's innovative Kinematic App by integrating the RIEGL VZ-2000i terrestrial laser scanner into mobile mapping workflows. The experience captured a 3-kilometer linear urban survey in just 10 minutes, redefining the standards of speed and efficiency in geospatial data acquisition.
From Static to Kinematic Without Additional Hardware
The secret to this transformation lies in the Kinematic app, which mobilizes VZ-i series scanners, such as the powerful VZ-2000i. Unlike other mobile systems that require expensive and complex integration kits, this application uses the sensors already built into the equipment:
- GNSS: Precise georeferencing compatible with RTK/PPK.
- IMU: Tilt sensors and accelerometers for exact orientation in motion.
RIEGL's sophisticated algorithm processes this data to reconstruct the equipment's trajectory, generating a georeferenced and accurate 3D point cloud as the system moves.

Total Control from the Palm of Your Hand
System operation is greatly simplified. Simply power on the scanner, and capture is fully controlled via Android or iOS devices. This connectivity allows operators to monitor and manage the survey in real-time from a smartphone or tablet, making the workflow more agile and intuitive.
The Impact: Time Savings and Quality Maintenance
The main advantage of this kinematic working mode is the significant reduction in capture times. Compared to the traditional methodology of multiple static stations, the mobile system allows extensive projects to be completed in a fraction of the time, while maintaining the renowned precision and point cloud quality characteristic of RIEGL equipment.
This development solidifies the RIEGL VZ-2000i as a versatile solution that maximizes investment, by allowing easy switching between detailed static surveys and large-area mobile mapping.
